Specify Unique Dimensions. Not all online kitchen design firms offer this service when you design your kitchen online, but some enable you to specify unique dimensions that vary from the standard sizes. This is very useful because it enables you fill in all your wall space without unsightly spaces. So you might want one cabinet a few inches wider or narrower to completely fill a wall either side of your cooker, for example. This service tends to be offered by firms that customize their furniture for their clients - generally found only with true craftsmen that hand-make their kitchen furniture to order. Once you have completed all of this, your order is constructed for you, finished to your specifications and delivered. The cabinets can be professionally installed for you or you can do this yourself. Online kitchen design is easy when carried out this way, and knowing how to do this should give you the confidence to design your kitchen online.
There are online kitchen design services that enable you to design your kitchen online. Such services enable you to select various components of your kitchen to fit the space you have available, and then have it made up and delivered to you ready for installation. Some firms will also carry out the installation. What are the advantages of an online kitchen design service over simply calling somebody in to do it for you? Cost is one benefit: it is a lot less expensive to do it yourself online than for somebody to come to your home and do what you could do just as easily yourself. Another benefit is that you get exactly what you want, and you cannot blame anybody else if it is not to your liking.
It can be difficult to envision the look you want. You have spent years in this kitchen and have grown accustomed to the usual look. A good place to start planning your DIY kitchen design and remodeling project is at the library. Page through the home decorating magazines. Look for issues that focus on kitchen designs. There are also magazines dedicated to the kitchen. Notice different arrangements, color schemes and features, such as pantrys, islands, breakfast bars and lighting which you find attractive. Of course, you may not be able to fit everything you want or like into your kitchen design, but these magazines will provide all the food for thought you will need. Photocopy pages of kitchens with particular features you did like to integrate into your DIY kitchen design and remodel. Pencil in notes of color schemes and note the manufacturers of particular products (usually in the index) that you like. Pay a visit to your local DIY center. These stores always have brochures for any number of projects, such as creating special effects with paint or building a kitchen island, which are free. Check especially in the kitchen display section for even more ideas. Carry a notebook in which you can jot down the name or product number of items such as tiles, cabinet facings, appliance covers, flooring, light fixtures, sinks or faucets that strike your fancy. Go online as well. With this preparatory work out of the way, you should have a large portfolio of inspiring ideas. Take a look at wallpaper collections.
THE FIRST STEPS. Determine with your family, who uses your current kitchen and how, and discuss the conveniences you would like to have in the new version. Make a scrapbook of articles and notes on kitchens and kitchen features that interest you and photographs of kitchens you like. Evaluate how and when you cook, where you serve meals to whom and how often you entertain and how you entertain. Inventory your dishes, silverware, serving pieces, cookware, linens, and your typical grocery storage requirements so that you can be sure that the new design accommodates everything. It seems that no matter how much time you budget for a remodeling project, it usually takes longer than you expected. For a complete remodel, the down time during construction can be at least two or three months and much longer, depending upon the size and extent of the project. Your family needs to eat in the meantime. So, before construction starts make arrangements to store, heat and clean up, enough to keep you going until the kitchen is back on-line. Many of my clients who have had the good fortune to have a bar sink in the family room, have moved in the old refrigerator and microwave near the bar sink and this combination becomes the interim kitchen during construction of the new one. The upside to this is that it provides a great rationale for eating out more often!
